Weaving Peace with a Gandhian box Charkha. by Shamji Bhai Vankar.

€150.00
sold out

“Spinning gets me into a meditative state. In fact, many a time i’ve caught myself singing.”

- Shamji Bhai Vankar.

Within the indian freedom movement spinning symbolised self sufficiency and an act of rebellion.

It is rare to come across an image of the Mahatma without his spinning wheel. However, unable to drag around the heavy traditional models across his long journeys through India, a more practical form of the charkha was invented specially for him: The box charkha.

A sleek, thin, portable spinning wheel contained in a foldable case with its implements springing like a pop-up book and layered atop each other with all the finesse of clockwork.

Maestro Shamji Vankar will teach the attendees of this workshop the basics of taking lumps of fiber and spinning them into yarn, the care and patience required for both the process of properly aligning the fibers, as well as the push and pull involved in slowly turning them into thread.

Centring the workshop on the joy contained in the process of spinning itself, each attendee will, after the fact, also be given the opportunity to purchase the Box Charkha they spun their own yarn with, at its cost price. So they may continue in their own practice, at their own pace.

No prior experience is required.

The Duration of the workshop will be roughly three hours.

All materials needed are provided for during the workshop.
